About The Event
Maqamat Academy Orchestra presents
“Iraqi Maqam: A New Vision”
Join us to celebrate a new vision of the Iraqi Maqam presented by award-winning musicians Naseer Shamma and Anwar Abudragh. With new lyrics, compositions, and singing styles, the Maqam will capture the spirit of this age, while preserving its classical roots.
Iraqi Maqam is a genre of traditional Arabic Maqam that dates back to the Abbasid era (8th–13th century). The idea of the project “Iraqi Maqam: A New Vision” was born in 2011 in Belgium. Both artists performed this new vision around the world along with the Maqamat Ensemble group. Maqamat International Orchestra (MIO) and Maqamat International Academy of Arts and Heritage (MIAAH) host this event in Canada for the first time, to introduce the new vision of Iraqi Maqam to North America.
